The first Berserker you encounter can only be killed with the Hammer of Dawn, which is located outside behind a number of locked doors. The only way to open the doors is to get the Berserker to smash them down.
The key to completing this is to perfect the technique of diving to the side when the Berserker is running at you, practice this move in the first room. When you are confident with this technique locate the first door and stand right in front of it with your back against the door. Get the Berserkers attention by shooting it or revving the chainsaw. When the Berserker runs at you dive to the side and the door (and most of the wall!) will be smashed down. Repeat this procedure in the next two rooms to find yourself outside, grab the hammer of dawn which is on the floor just outside the last door and let it rip on the Berserker.
