stuck in 2 player game

We are stuck in level 4 "the swamp" in a 2 player game.

The following is posted as a walkthrough:

"Here, grab the Moon Pearl. Exit out of the underground realm to the cemetary. Move east to the original graveyard area, but stay north. Locate the Moon Portal area against the east wall and pass through. In the underworld, move north to the next portal and step in. Here, you'll be by the house you couldn't get to earlier, facing a bunch of ghosts. Southeast of the house are four bushes in a square. Hack them away and step on the revealed buttons. This will take care of the ghosts and the swamp blocking your path. Once this is done, enter the house and speak to Dampe. Collect the Power Bracelet from the treasure chest. Exit out."

However, in a 2 player game, the two parties each have two characters and the moon portal only transports two of us to the underworld - therefore there are not four of us to activate the buttons to clear the swamp? We cannot figure out a way to get all four characters through the portal or to activate the buttons with only two characters.

Please help as we are stuck and haven't found an answer anywhere on the web.

here do this.

when each player has two links push the z button to only control one link. then go to the moon portal so ur in the realm world and as soon as ur both through the moon portal call back the other links that u left behind and now u can activate the switch. easy actually
