can someone tell me who and what big boss is and also why was he the star of mgs3 and then the villan in mg2 solid snake

I'm currently playing:
big boss is the origional american hero so to speak. he is the firstand the best fighter in the MGS series. big boss was so good the government took samples from his DNA and made 3 other snakes, solid snake, liquid snake and naked snake.
