Well lets see. I'm messing around with Emerald version at the moment (on me emulator of course

), so its all kinda come back to me. There is no such thing as a perfect team, but just make sure you have an equal balance of types. Know your type strength/weaknesses off by heart (like water is good against fire, psychic is good against fighting, electric is bad against ground etc), and use that to try and construct as well rounded team as possible. Also, make sure that you level them all up as equally as possible. If you go mad on your favourite fire type and make him twice as strong as all the others, what happens when you battle in the water gym? Try to have at least one pokemon in the team for each exploitable weakness. And get used to fast switching between them when you go up against trainers with different types

Yes, you need to know your weaknesses. But your missing tons of important advice.
1) Movesets are important. If you don't have a good moveset, you'll never be able to beat good trainers (Real life.).
2) Power isn't everything, infact, power sucks at times. Most of the time really.
3) Stats, Ev's, Nature's, and Abilities make every little difference. Each type of stat makes all the difference.
4) Strategy and Tactics are important. VERY important.
5) Legendaries, or Ubers, are not as good as they sound. They will never 'Own every single trainer ever'. In fact, no pokemon is perfect. no matter what. But, you can make sure that you have the first 4 steps in them.
6) You can try out your team on Netbattle. It's a near-replica of Pokemon, and you play against some of the top trainers from around the world. There are a few glitches though... but they dont happen very often.
