SP Demo Performance
Post: #1 - 23 Sep 2005 03:25
I am worried that my system is not performing as well as it should. I have dual BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OCs, a P4 3.2GHz, and 4x 512MB 667MHz Corsair RAM on an MSI P4N Diamond mobo. I called BFG and they told me I need at least 540W on my PSU for my system, and mine only has 500W. I experience low performance on the F.E.A.R. SP Demo and the Starship Troopers SP demo, and it's no different whether I have SLI enabled or not. Also, I get unresponsive crashes with SLI enabled on any driver newer than 77.72, and graphical anomolies with SLI enabled on Windows XP x64 (but not on Windows XP Professional). Could it really be the PSU? And is low performance normal in the F.E.A.R. demo on a system like mine? Any help would be appreciated.

That seems like a damn good system and miles better than mine, but I get no problems at all with the F.E.A.R. demo (haven't tried the Starship Troopers one though, I'm guessing you're getting them from PC Gamer?).

Dammit man, thats one uber F off system you got yourself there, but I have to say that I see your PSU as a very weak point. I have a 600W PSU for my setup, and thats just to be on the safe side really. You would be surprised what an underpowered PC ends up (not) doing. We found that my brother's PC was seriously underpowered, and that crashed and restarted pointlessly a lot. Power can make a lot of difference (and if you have 2 bloody graphics cards, I'm sure you'll notice it!

I hope it is the power. Problem is, when I first got the thing I had it on a 600W PSU (which threw bolts and died) and I still got unresponsive crashes in Morrowind just like I do now. So even if a better PSU fixes the performance issue, I'll still have to fix the crashing.
Thanks for your input! I RMAd the PSU that died for a replacement and it should be coming in any day now.

No expert but you need a lot of power to run your system, check out Custom PC issue 26 Nover 2005 massive review on PSU's. It isn't just how much they say they have ie generic 600w there were alot of good names that fell well short of the mark, I just got a 6800 ultra AGP as the last upgrade on my current set up. Seems like you'll need FSP FX600 OR SEASONIC S12-600 UNFORTUNATLEY
they are both around £100 inc delivery but you need it. hope this helps andy williams
