Whoa

What about that finale! It was amazing. I think the best bit was when Walt came back. The ending was a bit mad, too much to take in. Where the hell were they? Also, the name of the funeral parlour was an anagram of 'flash-forward'!

What were your views? Where does lost go from here? More flash-forwards? Who the hell were those people on the boat? Was ben right? What were Locke's motivations? Why did sawyer kill tom? Was walt real or a mirage or a spirit? Where was micheal? Is mikhail dead yet? How did jack and kate get off the island? Why did they leave? Why wasn't kate in jail. And what the f*** was up with Jack? He was having a mental breakdown, Far too much to take in! So many questions. So much time to burn till February 08. CRAZY!

who the hell is jacob
why the hell does locke wanna stay on the island
why does the frech lady say she wanna stay on the island
how was lockes dad on the island? how do the others know so much about everything?

damn your right
its just the show started off as a simple show with a few twists now its like a f**kin rollercoaster with a the twists now its twist after twist it doesnt give you time to rest.

it truly is an amazing show, although i think they should only do 1 more series or 1 and a little extension. thing is , if kate and jack r the only ones off the island, (say if jack had to choose one person) why cant they use the phone to dial home, cause a satellite phone should pick up anything

and also the signals arent jammed anymore and you cant unjam them because of the flooded room

o and if they lose the phone, broke, snatched by the others, they can still kill the russian and use the satellite at the farm house because locke knows how to win the thing, (if it is not fully destroyed from the c4 on enter 77)

Yeh thats busted, that was the point in locke blowing it up cause he didn't want to leave, i reckon Kate is now with Sawyer, and it said the the papaer the funeral was for (can't remember name) a random guy, who is supposedly ment to be coming in the show, so maybe there is a whole new story to tell.

On the island -> <Story> -> Off the island

Ok, i'm halfway through season 3, and here's my theory:

The isle of LOST = Purgatory. For those that don't know, purgatory is where the dead go before their ascension to heaven or the descent to hell. This is only a theory, but here are some points to back it up.

a: At the end of episode 12, season 3 (i'm assuming you've seen it, if not SPOILER).

Ok, so at the end of that episode, the woman who parachutes crashes on the island reveals that flight 815 was found and all passengers were dead. I'm not sure what happens in subsequent episodes about that, but at this point this is my strongest link. The passengers (i.e, Jack, Kate, Sawyer et al) died on that flight and are, in fact, spirits in purgatory awaiting judgement. Which brings me to...

B: The smoke monster.

This is their judgement. And it judges, and eradicates, those that are going to hell. For example, Mr Eko. The smoke monster judges Eko and destroys him,banishes him, as punishment for his ill deeds before he is sent to hell. Those that "die" peacefully ascend to heaven. The island judges, the monster is the executioner.

C: Desmond.
When Desmond tries to escape on the ship, he ends up returning to the island, claiming that there is no escape as there is nothing else out there. On an isle of purgatory, there would be no escape until realisation of death and judgement.

D: Flashbacks.
The flashbacks are not an element for the audience, but for the island to judge. The island judges the people by having them reveal their lives and whether they were good or bad, redeemable or irredeemable. We see the flashbacks because we see what the island sees.

E: The others

It is said that to move into the afterlife, one must acheive realisation and acceptance of ones death. The others are the souls that refuse to acknowledge their deaths and continue in a state of limbo. By removing themselves from the main island, they are out of the judgemental gaze of it.

A few other key things:

1: The spirits of the dead appearing: Jack's dad, Eko's brother. They appear to make them realise their own deaths and alow them to move on.

2: When Eko is dying he says to Locke and a couple of people, "you're next", implying that their time of judgement is near. Eko had realised his own fate from speaking with his brother, and was ready to be judged.


Ok, so this is a basic theory, filled with inconsistensies and stuff, but my basic belief is that they are in purgatory. I'll read more into it and see what's what. One thing that i can't fit into this theory is the Dharma corporation. I'll figure it out.

I really hate to burst your bubble on this one Gaz, but the show's producers have completely and categorically denied the show was about purgatory. I think after such a blatant denial, it would really annoy a lot of fans if it turned out that it was.

I understand your thinking though, and thats why it was a popular theory at the beginning of the show.

RIGHT SPOILERS-ish!

However the end of Series 2 really does kind of prove once and for all that the island isn't a metaphorical state of purgatory, because when the button isn't pressed and Desmond has to do his key thing, and you see that white-purpley light thing across the island, something happens that hadn't happened before in Lost. The signal that was emitted by the electromagnet when Desmond turned the key was picked up by those Scandinavian (?) people who were working for Penny (to presumably find Desmond). This is the first time events on the island have affected people OFF of the island, and so proves that it cannot be purgatory but must be an island that exists in reality. You get me?

Secondly I'm of the belief that the Smoke monster is controlled by the others. (Don't ask me how though.) It was referred to by Rousseau in the first series as the island's Security system. What I take from that is that it is there to protect the island's secrets and the continuity of the work currently being undertaken by the others. I think this is the reason that at the very beginning of the show, the pilot is killed by a monster (which we can later presume was the smoke monster) because he would know the rough location of where the plane crashed, and perhaps would be able to aid in the Losties rescue. That might mean secrets would get out about the island if they were rescued and the Others’ secret research maybe uncovered, as well as the secret of the island.

It could later be extended to explain why Locke was nearly pulled underground in Series 1 too (what with all his snooping). Not really sure the rationale for Eko, but I’d have to re-watch Series 2 to see if he was close to unearthing something. I suppose it could be so that Locke got his stick…

This leads me nicely onto my main theory of Lost which must surely rely on time, and cause and effect. The old adage of “everything happens for a reason” rings true so much in Lost its uncanny. Also you may have heard that some of the characters, (Rousseau and Desmond to name but two) are actually the names of learned scientists that deal with cause and effect. Look at this another way and the ugly word of ‘fate’ rears its ugly head. Now I don’t believe in fate – in that I believe we have the ability to change our actions and future outcome, and I think this argument of whether we can change the future will become more apparent in future series of Lost, especially with respect to the flash-forward at the end of Series 3, and whether or not that is simply one glimpse of the future that may or may not come true depending on events on the island, or whether we are doomed to a particular end and there is nothing we can do about it. (Note the Desmond and Charlie storyline for a specific reference to this argument).
