First of all I love this game so much. Lets start off with the offline mode. Basically you are part of an army, American, Chinese, etc. you go to the missions with like ten to twenty guys. Your goal is to complete the mission without losing any men. This game has one of the best modes ever, hotswap, it allows you to switch guys with any one on your team so you don’t have to wait for your guy to die. There are a lot of missions you can do and bonus mission.
Now lets go online. The online game play is some of the best I have ever played! The game does support 24-player online multiplayer action on both the Xbox and PS2 versions. However, there are only two game modes available: conquest (the standard capture-and-hold mode popularized by the PC Battlefield games), and capture the flag. The hot-swap capability, which is the best part of the single-player game, can't be used in multiplayer, for obvious reasons. As far as the actual gameplay goes, multiplayer Modern Combat plays pretty well.
So there are about 13 action packed maps you can play. There are two game modes, conquest and CTF (capture the flag). Most people that just got the game like to play at a map called Bridge Too Far. Now I am not saying that that map is for beginners, I am just saying that if you want to play there don’t expect to play anything else for a while.
My personal favorite maps are Conquest- Special Op, The Nest, Missile Crisis, Honor, and Damage. For Capture the Flag- Deadly pass, Honor, Backstab, Russian Border, The Nest Special Op, and Cold Front. You can have up to twenty-four people playing at a time (twelve people on each team) once you get good people start sending you invitations to ply as part of their clan.
Overall, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has made a decent first effort in bringing the Battlefield experience to consoles. All the necessary elements are there to make a great shooter like infantry and vehicles together in large-scale, combined-arms battles. The hot-swap feature is also really cool and an idea i hope will get expanded on should the console franchise continue on. What's missing in Modern Combat are the little things that really made the Battlefield series so great in the first place, like getting the look, feel, and sound of the weapons and vehicles just right. Despite those deficiencies, Modern Combat is still probably worth a look, especially if you've never played a Battlefield game (or clone) before.
