The blocks fall down in different shapes, sizes and colours and you have to fit them together to make lines. Clearing a line gets you points. Get to the top past the line and the game is over. You know what I’m talking about. It may have been one of the first ever games made on the market but people still enjoy it today. Tetris is back and on the DS but with a Nintendo twist.

The twists Nintendo have made are that every mode you play features a Nintendo character theme whether it’s Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Samus (Metroid Prime) or any of the others. There are also six game modes including Standard, Mission, Touch and more. You can also play the game wirelessly with a single card or go WiFi and play against the world.

You can either use the stylus or the arrows to move pieces whether it’s rotating them or lowering them with ease making the game easier to pick up and play.

The game works perfectly on the DS as the two screens can fit more on. The top screen has a little animation to do with the characters theme and on the right half of the touch screen is the actual character. The points could have been put on the touch screen but it doesn’t really make a difference as you just go as fast as you can in most modes. On the left of the touch screen is the amount of lines cleared and the level you are on and on the right is a character from the game and the next blocks to fall down are on the right.

The different modes are Standard, Push, Touch, Puzzle, Mission and Catch. In Standard Mode you have the choice of Marathon (where you keep clearing lines and for every 10 lines you clear you level up), Line Clear (where you choose the level and the line height you want and you battle to earn the most points by clearing 25 lines) and Vs.CPU (where you select the strength of your opponent and begin the battle). In Push Mode you play on a vertical board with you and the CPU at either side and you have to try and get your opponents blocks past the danger line by clearing your blocks. In Touch Mode you have the choice of Tower (where you move the Tetriminos in the massive stack to clear them away) and Touch Puzzle (where you follow the directions on the top screen to complete the puzzles). In Puzzle Mode you clear a puzzle using a limited section of Tetriminos. In Mission Mode you have the choice of Marathon (where you keep completing missions until your game is over) and Time Trial (where you see how fast you can complete 10 missions) and finally there’s Catch Mode where you control a flying core and you attempt to catch falling Tetriminos. Instead of controlling the Tetriminos that fall from above, you control the core on the lower screen and try to latch onto falling Tetriminos.

The graphics aren’t really needed but what you see is amazing in itself as the blocks have a little border kind of thing which is quite nice and playing the game with friends online or offline is a fun occasion (or sometimes very nasty).

I wasn’t really a big fan of Tetris as I thought it was boring but the twists by Nintendo make this the perfect game to play wherever you want so I would recommend this for everyone as it is one of those games with a very big life span with all the game modes to choose from. Another great game from Nintendo.
