Years and years ago, Super Mario Bros. was by far the best game out with you only having to press six buttons. Now, Nintendo have remade it especially for the Nintendo DS and it is by far one of the best ever handheld games to be released.
The obvious difference with the game is that the graphics are a major improvement and are probably the best graphics in a game on the Nintendo DS. Another major improvement to the original is how the game is set out. You can now go back to levels and replay them to get more lives, coins and more. On every game there are three big gold coins. These coins can be spent to open different paths containing different levels and bonus places. These bonus places give you different power ups and lives.
The basic story is the same as the old version. Bowser has captured Princess Peach and you have to save her but every time you defeat Bowser he just keeps running.
You can save you’re progress on the game but the annoying thing is that you can’t save it whenever you want. You either have to beat Bowser or to spend the big gold coins where you get the option to save which can get annoying if you want to play it for a few minutes as each level takes about three minutes depending on how good you are.
Some of the Power Ups in the game are similar to the original like the invincibility and the mushroom to grow bigger but now they have included a yellow red spotted mushroom which makes you bigger for a certain amount of time and the more damage you do, the more lives you get. Another new one is the blue shell which is like a tortoise shell and you are protected when you hold down but opponents can jump on top to knock you off the edge and stuff. When you get Mario in the white suit all you have to do it press X and he will fire out fireballs to kill you’re enemies. All the same old enemies return (including Bowser) so you’ll know their weaknesses and what they shoot by now…surely?
Multiplayer is a big thing in the game. Get a friend with a DS (they don’t have to own the game) and you can challenge them in a star collecting game. This is fun especially when you’re both skilled players as games can go on for ages or can be very short.
I don’t know why Nintendo do this but the game has Minigames available to play. These Minigames are fun and some are very addictive but most of these are the same as Super Mario 64 DS so you would just be putting scores for the same minigames on different games which is pointless.
Overall, for New. Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS:
Graphics: 9 – The best graphics I’ve seen on the DS yet but not perfect.
Gameplay: 9 – The game doesn’t flicker, slow down or similar
Life Span: 9 – With Minigames, Story mode and Multiplayer there’s no real reason to get rid of the game.
Online/Multiplayer: 8 – Very fun and addictive but other modes could have been added to improve it.
Overall: 9/10 – Surely one of the best games you’ll ever buy for a handheld console and one you'll be playing for months to come.
Lots of copies of the game have been sold and no wonder. Lots of deals have been done surrounding this game as it came out very close to the DS Lite so look around for the best deals for surely one of the best games.
