Soul Calibur is one of the unsung heroes of the fighting beat-em-up games. With a rave reviews from all magazines its sure to be a definite hit. Well is It ? I’ll be putting Soul Calibur 2 to the test.
The story… well. There is a story as such. If you do arcade whichever character you pick will have a different background etc. and will also have there own little cut scenes. Though the main story mode is set up in chapters. You start with the training. All of which are quite easy apart form the blocking which is a cow. Then you earn experience and Gold. Also in this mode the ability to buy weapons for certain characters though sometimes this is not a good thing, some weapons can decrease your health but on the plus side, the attacks are usually better but if you need to block then its not a weapon of choice. You can also unlock costumes, some of these for the girls are sassy. (not that I looked).
The game play as you might know is a beat-em-up or more commonly known as a fighting style. If your unfamiliar with the fighting games then this is the basic. Most of them are like arcade style, so you have a time limit and in the top. But you have two fighters and it’s a face off using weapons/moves to decrease your opponents life bar. Soul Calibur though has the ability to Power up for better attacks, detailed throws which do devastating damage and you do the basic horizontal, vertical ands kick attacks. There are lots of moves spreading over about 20 characters. Each character having there strengths and weaknesses. The best in my opinion was a charming fellow naming Cervantes. He is a ghost pirate with swords. He has devastating throws and not a man to be messed with. There are lots of modes to unlock. There are characters to unlock and with all these characters there are museum which shows there profile.
Graphics are stunning, with power-ups (like a charge) being coloured with a purple fire which looks stunning. With the characters being detailed and the weapons being very stylish. Though some of the characters remind me of some other hard men funnily enough there all from Capcom. Like Dante, Nightmare and Mistirugi, Samanouske. What really blows my mind is the environments. They all are detailed and I’d like to see being interactive with the environment, (like running up walls) the actual look of it is brilliant. The weapons in more details are very good, with characters ranging from a pole, to these kick ass swords, also swords and shields they are the best I’ve seen.
I have a few problems with the sound but they are minor and you know there in my opinion so its not a real problem. All the hard characters speak with well to put it clear speak a bit queer, though this is personal. The commentator guy can get a bit annoying, but some of the comments the fighters say (well its how they say them. The music fit’s the scene as well, a peaceful surrounding has peaceful music, though an acid-covered scene has quite hard music
Overall this is a top quality fighting game. I don’t really play much arcade style fighting games but this one is really special. With game play being supreme with slick moves nice costumes for some babes and with some really tough-nut men. With graphics stylish and crisp and sound… well can be annoying bit the actual music is cool I think this game deserves a Cooljon’s ten outta ten. That isn’t given out to any run of the mill games you know.
