Neverwinter Nights is the best and longest(60+ hours) 3rd edition D&D rules game to be released for a long time. It combines the best features of all previous Bioware RPG'S (Baldur's Gate 1&2, Fallout 1&2, Icewind dale 1&2 and Planescape:Torment)and adds a whole new set of options vastly improving the already brilliant gameplay. Although there are no kits, unlike Shadows of Amn, the addition of several new weapon types, spells, feats and skills, Toolset and Dungeon Master modes makes it well worth going without the kits, especially as the lively modding community on the net have already made more character classes and bonus content than you could ever need. The new 3D interface increases the believability and the sheer depth of detail which accompanies all Bioware RPGS is not missing here. They have evidently tried really hard to make the best and most versatile RPG and they have very nearly succeeded. For the first time in my experience of games, the support website actually works and provides content for everybody.
On the other hand, like every game, it has minor flaws. The henchmen pathfinding can be shoddy at times and horrific at others. Many times I have been reduced to screaming hysterically "There is no way to climb the huge dragon. Now stop trying and protect me!" as my main character is slain for the multimillionth time. The camera is a bit annoying but the release of an unofficial patch giving you complete control over the camera hugely improves this. Sometimes on some servers the game may stop momentarily. The sound isn't groundbreaking, but it is good, solid cut-off-the-orcs-head-with-a-big-sword stuff. Sometimes it does a brilliant job, yet at others I hear peaceful village music while getting massacred by some orcs. The expansion packs add more sound, but more about that later.
Finally, I think this game is worth buying. The addition of two expansion packs, adding prestige classes, new weapons, tilesets, feats, skills and storylines has will increase the playability and life of this game even though it will probably not appeal to your average Gung-Ho Shooter player. I would reccomend this game to anyone who likes games which require you to think.
