Every sport has it's presure point cliche,(Football - penalties, baseball- bottom of the 9th, bases loaded etc.), but snooker?! Although not first in people's mind, snoker evokes the greatest mental pressure, as the 18.5 million people who tuned into Steve Davis' and Dennis Taylor's epic 1985 snooker world championship final would testify. And so to the game. A sport as technical and painstaking as snooker would you would think be difficult to recreate effectively, but Codemasters have managed that feat magnificently. Its all here, the boiler room venues(The Crucible), the tournaments(every tournament imaginable) and the sidegames(trickshots, 8 and 9 ball pool), the attention-to-detail is astounding. There is a massively improved AI and the players (of which there are 100+) are all motion-captured beautifully, to add to the realism that really, hand-in-hand with playability, is what sports sims are really about. WCS 2004 manages these tasks very well, giving the player total control throughout with spin, power and shot selection at your fingertips at all times. With a game this realistic and yet so damn playable at the same time, theres bound to be converts up and down the country. Of course it is not perfect, gaming buffs will perhaps pick out the rather steep learning curve as an obstacle to complete enjoyment of the game. But when you're taking on a long match-winning red at the crucible at the highpoint of you virtual career, who cares? Buy it, and watch the days turn into nights as addiction sets in!
