Right, I reviewed the first game and gave it 10/10. here we are with the second, and believe me when I say the scale is not large enough to give this game what it is due. After a few teething problems with the Steam authentication (although this is probably due to me registering on the first day along with all the preloaded people), I began to play what I would regard as the best FPS, or even video game, of all time. From the very first 'Rise and shine, Mr Freeman,' you know it is going to be good. The graphics are great on my 32MB graphics card, so imagine how they will look on something with a bit more power! And then theres the in built physics system. Wow. Never before have I seen objects in a video game that 'Obey laws of gravity, friction and buoyancy', to quote the blurb from the packaging. I have not long began to control squads of teammates, but if you ever played the first game then you would only be as amazed as me. Im sure you remember having to leave your beloved Barney behind because he couldnt climb up that small ledge or jump from that platform. Not any longer. Jumping, climbing, even changing weapons for better ones dropped by the Combine, these guys are great! I wont spoil the storyline for you, but I will say that theres something for everyone here. All out, guns-blazing battles, the good ol' jumping puzzles (as seen in the first game!), and even a spot of driving for you petrol heads! Theres an airboat early on, and then a buggy later (complete with handbrake and turbo charger!). And then of course, theres the gravity gun. This is a device that takes full advantage of the physics system. Smash objects about, throw barrels at people... you decide.
If you like FPS games, go out and buy this. If you have ever considered dabbling in FPS games, go out and buy this. If you dont own a PC, go out and get one just so you can buy this. Its that good. Not forgetting the remodelled Counter-Strike, the most popular multiplayer game of all time renovated with the Source engine. Definitely a winner.
"Wake up, Mr Freeman. Wake up and smell the ashes..."
