If I told you what I really thought about this game, the editors of this site would not even consider posting my review. My opinion of this game is as foul as the language that flows incessantly from every character in every scene. I knew the game was going to have the language, thus the M rating, but come on, enough is enough. Anytime there was a chance to throw in an "F" bomb, the writers through in two or three.
The game was filled with nonstop glitches ranging from the mildly inconvenient to the game-stopping freeze. The glitches were so bad in this game that I will never buy another game made by Activision. Fortunately, I found a website that listed all of the glitches and workarounds - two pages worth. I don't expect perfection, there are too many things to put into today's games for something not to go worng, but two pages of glitches - come on guys.
There are twenty precincts to clean up - each one with the same crimes over and over and over again. In between those, you get to go on some pretty cool missions in an effort to solve the murder of your mentor. Those missions were challenging enough to make you think, but nowhere near impossible. That part of the game was actually very enjoyable.
The third prong of quests is the missions you have to run for your two informants, a madam needing you to chaufer her girls around and beat up johns who cross them, and a cabbie with nine wives and a gambling problem. The mamdam missions were fairly entertaining and one of them was downright hilarious. The cabbie missions ranged from helping him flee from bookies with guns to delievering his 9 diahrea stricken wives to the faith healer via a stolen bus.
Lastly, you have to run errands to preserve the family business for you father while he sits in a ultra lavish jail cell and barks orders. As you can imagine, these aren't the errands you want to go back tell your cop buddies about. But they did add some adventure to the game.
In addition to running errands and solving crimes, you have to participate in a series of street races and a series of underground fight cicuits. These have absolutely no bearing on the game except that you can't complete the game without completing them. I never like stuff thrown into a game that doesn't help move you towards the game's objectives.
The driving, ramming other cars, beating the crap out of people for no reason and stealing cars at will is a welcome break from the real world. How many times have we all wished we could those things while we sat stuck in traffic on our way to or from school/work?
This game really has a lot of promise. Unfortunately, the fun parts of the game were completely overshadowed by the glitches. The programming was so terrible that it absolutely destroyed what might have been a great game. Instead, it is by far the worst game that I have ever played. It will not even find a place in my game library - it is headed straight to used bin in my local store. And you have my deepest symapthies if you buy it.
I would like to end my review on a positive note, so I will say the most positive thing I can about True Crime New York City. And that is this - Thank God I finished it and now throught with it.
The other thing that I liked about the game was the driving,
