As a loyal fan of the Final Fantasy series, I eagerly awaited this GBA version of Square's much acclaimed PSone strategy RPG. In short, the game is fun, has sufficient depth and is well suited to being played while on the move.
Unfortunately, the game is not without its disappointments. The job system is very good although when it comes down to it many of the job classes of the different races do share the same abilities - the names differ, that's all. Even if one was not expecting the grandeur and complexity of its predecessor, one cannot help but notice the easy difficulty level. One can appreciate Square's incentive to appeal to a wider market, however it would have been great if the game had different selectable difficulty levels. As it stands, the computer AI is not quite up to scratch and in many instances it takes actions which do not make good tactical sense. For example, you can obtain a special ability for your character to block all arrow attacks. It is not uncommon for enemy archers to repeatedly target this protected character and waste their turns in combat. You on the other hand have the unfair advantage of seeing what abilities the enemy has and so you can plan your moves with greater wisdom.
My guess is that the game will score higher with the younger or more casual player. As a tactical game, it doesn't quite rise to the heights of Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. As an RPG it isn't really a true follower in the footsteps of the Final Fantasy series. What you have here is something that treads a happy medium between RPG and strategy and is also a good game. That is a rare thing on the GBA or the DS.
