The line up for the new Microsoft XBOX 360 launch looked excellent with Perfect Dark Zero, one of the most popular First Person Shooters (FPS) returning to the gaming world through the next generation console, Quake 4 another FPS, FIFA 06: Road to the FIFA World Cup, the exclusive football game for the 360 by EA and then there were games like Gun (action/adventure), Need for Speed: Most Wanted (racing) and NBA Live 2006 (basketball) which had already been released on the XBOX but were remade and improved for the XBOX 360. Another one of those games was Peter Jackson’s King Kong which is what this review is on.

Your probably wondering why I bought King Kong for the XBOX 360. Well, I can tell you, I got it as part of a deal with a Premium Pack on the release date along with Perfect Dark Zero.

Peter Jackson’s King Kong is the game based on the 3 hour long film starring one of the most famous actors around, Jack Black, released at the same time. Having missed the opportunity to see the film I was determined to try the game. The first thing I noticed was the graphics. They were the best I had ever seen on a game (but that was before Perfect Dark Zero and other XBOX 360 games). I then noticed the sound in the game and it is incredible with surround sound. There is also a bit where if you get hit you can hear Jack’s or Kong’s heartbeat and the screen will flash red which is a very nice affect. You can hear the water like its right next to you which I have never experienced in a game.

The game starts off with you exploring the island but then Ann gets taken by this giant gorilla and you go back to rescue her (the same as in the film).

There are 40 levels on the game. Some are 10 minutes long some may take up to 1 hour. There’s one level where all you do is go through some water and onto a raft which takes about 2 minutes which is pretty pointless. There are only 4 or 5 levels with Kong which is also disappointing as it is probably the best part of the game as Kong has much more strength than Jack (the character you play) that killing dinosaurs is much more fun).

My favourite levels are the last ones where you control Kong in the cities as you have to trash the place (which is my kind of thing) but otherwise the game is quite repetitive getting fire to the baskets and killing dinosaurs.

The game is not on XBOX Live (which is one of the only games not to be online for the XBOX 360) which really lets the game down as after the Story Mode all you can do is unlock the bonus ending by going back on certain levels and getting the points needed on each one.

Overall, I would only get this game for around thirty to thirty five pounds as the lack of things to do on it let it down but if you loved the film and/or love King Kong then this would be the perfect game for you. I wouldn’t get this game if you are looking for a game with lots of things to keep you going for a while.

If you liked this you would probably like Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend (coming out soon) or Gun (out now) as they are both very similar to King Kong as they both have story mode, good graphics and a lot more.
